To Direct a show with the Tower ...
For current or experienced Tower Theatre directors, you will need to fill in this form when applying to direct for a particular season. The form should then be submitted to Martin Mulgrew

For aspiring directors with no experience of directing for the Tower, the Tower Theatre operates an Assistant Directors' Scheme.

All prospective directors should have some experience working on a Tower production. Even if you have previous experience directing outside of Tower you will need to familiarise yourself with the workings of the Company, so we operate an assistant director scheme for all aspiring Tower directors. To be eligible to direct a Tower show you must :
  • Join the Tower Theatre Company : if you are not already a member of the Tower Theatre you must join as a Friend of the Company.
  • Complete an application form : Once you have joined as a Friend you can download and complete an application form.
  • Support a production : You must work on a production as either a sound or lighting operator or as an Assistant Stage Manager. We will let you know of opportunities to support a production and put you in touch with the director of the show. If you are an acting member and have performed in a Tower show you may not be required to support a production in another capacity.
  • Act as Assistant Director on at least one Tower production : This will be with an experienced and approved director, who may later act as mentor. ADs are expected to participate throughout the production process from initial production meetings, marketing decisions and auditions, through to get-out and budget reconciliation. This is so you can learn from established directors and get a full understanding of the scale of the undertaking. The AD is also normally the publicity co-ordinator for the production, responsible for liaising between the Production Team and the Marketing Committee. You will be expected to help galvanise the cast and encourage brainstorming of promotion strategies, which will be executed in collaboration with the Marketing Committee.
  • Attend at least one Directing Workshop : All new directors to Tower must attend the So you want to direct? workshop. This provides an overview of directing for the Tower, including how to assemble a production team and managing budgets, as well as practicalities, such as arranging auditions and booking rehearsal rooms. We also run a number of other workshops delivered by experienced Tower directors and guest directors, which we encourage you to attend. Details of our workshops are here.
  • Debrief session : Following the workshop, you will meet with a member of the Artistic Team and mentor director to discuss what you have learned from the scheme and consider areas you may need extra support with as a first-time director.

You will then be eligible to pitch for a show to the Artistic Director. We encourage first-time directors to start with rehearsed readings or small-scale productions. Your mentor director or a member of the Artistic Team will attend rehearsals sporadically and be available for advice.
To apply for this scheme, volunteer as a mentor director or to enquire about our directing workshops, please email Martin Mulgrew.

Non-Acting Membership
You can also join the Company as a Non-Acting Member by simply applying to the Company Committee and then paying your subscription.

Acting and Directing with the Tower Theatre are not the only ways of being part of the Company. To put on the show we also need Designers, Backstage Crews, Front of House staff, Publicity ... the list goes on. As an example of what it takes to get a show on the stage, here's a series of photos showing how one of our shows is put together in the theatre ...
